Summary

We recommend to Scottish Ministers the revision to all staffing tools. The changes to the tools will reflect the reduction in standard working hours from 37.5 to 37 hours. The recommendations are in line with duties outlined in the Health and Care (Staffing) (Scotland) Act 2019. The tools affected are:

  • Adult inpatient staffing level tool

  • Community children’s & children’s specialist nurse staffing level tool

  • Clinical nurse specialist staffing level tool

  • Community nurse staffing level tool

  • Emergency care provision staffing level tool

  • Maternity staffing level tool

  • Mental health and learning disability staffing level tool

  • Neonatal staffing level tool

  • SCAMPS – Scottish children’s acuity measurement in paediatric settings

  • Professional judgement staffing level tool

  • Small wards staffing level tool

The recommendations paper to Scottish Ministers was produced by the Healthcare Staffing Programme. It outlines the detail of how work was undertaken and the evidence to support the recommendations.

These are technical documents designed to be used by specialist staff. If you need further information on the tools, contact his.hsp@nhs.scot
