What are standards and indicators?

Standards are statements of levels of service performance that the public should expect from health services.

They are based on evidence relating to effective clinical practice, feasibility and service provision that is responsive to patients’ needs and views. They cover the key issues for safe, effective and person-centred care and treatment.

Our indicators are tools for quality improvement and can be used to support service standards. Services can use the framework to gather statistical information for comparison, benchmarking and monitoring. The process allows for the identification of areas of improvement and improved quality of care for people using the service.
