Inspections of healthcare in prison

Summary

His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons for Scotland (HMIPS) has a statutory duty to inspect and monitor the conditions in which prisoners are held and the treatment they receive. While in prison, people should expect to receive the same health care as everyone else.

NHSScotland has been responsible for providing primary and community healthcare to those in Scottish prisons since 2011.

Healthcare Improvement Scotland works with HMIPS to manage the healthcare element of inspections of prisons.

Inspection reports

The final inspection reports for prisons are published on the HMIPS website:

Standards for inspecting and monitoring prisons

HMIPS has developed a set of nine standards which set out what is expected of a well-run prison and what will be inspected and monitored during the inspection process.

As part of this work, we have developed standard nine, which relates to health and wellbeing:

Standard 9: Health and Wellbeing – The prison takes all reasonable steps to ensure the health and wellbeing of all prisoners
