Applying for a Controlled Drugs Accountable Officer (CDAO) exemption

Healthcare providers can apply to be exempt from appointing a CDAO. We manage this process for those who meet the specified criteria.

Independent healthcare providers that have less than 10 staff do not need to appoint a CDAO

Independent healthcare providers with over 10 staff can apply for exemption. They should do this if they:

  • do not normally use a lot of controlled drugs
  • would find it difficult to appoint a suitable individual to the role

We keep a record of exempt organisations. We publish these alongside the CDAO register.

We have set up a dedicated e-form to receive CDAO exemption applications. By using this form, you will be leaving our website. You will be using services provided by Microsoft who act as a data processor on behalf of NHS Scotland. Further information can be found within the MS privacy notice, terms of use and use of cookies.

We also have a a dedicated mailbox for CDAO enquiries.
