Summary

We carried out unannounced focused inspections of the emergency department at Glasgow Royal Infirmary on Tuesday 9 April and 3–5 June 2024.

During our inspection of Glasgow Royal Infirmary, we:

  • inspected the ward and hospital environment
  • observed staff practice and interactions with patients, such as during patient mealtimes
  • spoke with patients, visitors and ward staff
  • accessed patients’ health records, monitoring reports, policies and procedures

Our findings

This inspection resulted in five areas of good practice, one recommendation and 11 requirements.

“NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde responded promptly to our concerns following the initial focused inspection of the emergency department. They provided assurance that immediate key actions had been put in place to improve patient safety within the department.”

Donna Maclean, Chief Inspector, Healthcare Improvement Scotland
