Summary
Public Health Scotland (PHS) data showed an increase in neonatal mortality in Scotland. This was in September 2021 and March 2022. The increase in neonatal mortality breached PHS statistical control limits.
On 17 August 2022, the Minister for Public Health, Women’s Health and Sport commissioned us to take forward this review in response to this significant increase in neonatal mortality.
This review covers reported neonatal deaths across Scotland between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2022.
It outlines our key findings and recommendations.
