Summary

We carried out an unannounced focused inspection of the emergency department at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital on Monday 8 April in line with our safe delivery of care acute hospital inspection methodology.

During this unannounced inspection to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Emergency Department we:

  • inspected the emergency department
  • observed staff practice and interactions with patients, such as during patient mealtimes
  • spoke with patients, visitors and staff
  • accessed patients’ health records, monitoring reports, policies and procedure

Our findings

This inspection resulted in six areas of good practice, one recommendation and five requirements.

“During our inspection of the Emergency Department of Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, and the hospital wide inspection of Royal Alexandra Hospital, we found them both to be calm and well-led. Areas for improvement have been identified and improvement action plans have been developed by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.”

Donna Maclean, Chief Inspector, Healthcare Improvement Scotland
