Summary

We carried out an unannounced inspection to University Hospital Crosshouse, NHS Ayrshire & Arran on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 May 2022.

Inspectors returned to University Hospital Crosshouse on Tuesday 24 May 2022 to follow up on areas of concern identified during the earlier inspection.

During our inspection, we:

  • inspected the ward and hospital environment
  • observed staff practice and interactions with patients, such as during patient mealtimes
  • spoke with patients, visitors and ward staff
  • accessed patients’ health records, monitoring reports, policies and procedures

Our findings

This inspection resulted in six areas of good practice and thirteen requirements.

“During our inspection we observed staff in clinical areas working hard to provide care. We observed examples of good teamwork and communication and positive interactions between staff and patients.

However, we also raised a number of concerns around the safe delivery of care. For example, in some parts of the hospital, patients were being cared for in areas such as corridors, making it difficult for staff to observe patients and provide care.

We will return to NHS Ayrshire & Arran in the near future to carry out a further inspection based on our concerns.”
