NHS hospitals and services
Summary
We carried out an unannounced inspection of Victoria Hospital, NHS Fife on Monday 31 July to Wednesday 2 August 2023. On Monday 14 August, we carried out an unannounced return visit to establish if significant concerns raised in relation to the maintenance of the hospital environment had been addressed.
We returned to carry out an unannounced follow-up inspection of Victoria Hospital in December 2024. The purpose of this follow-up inspection was to assess progress made against the actions contained within NHS Fife’s improvement action plan and the serious patient safety concerns raised through our formal escalation process.
During our inspection, we:
- inspected the ward and hospital environment
- observed staff practice and interactions with patients, such as during patient
mealtimes - spoke with patients, visitors and ward staff, and
- accessed patients’ health records, monitoring reports, policies and
procedures.
Our findings
This follow-up inspection resulted in nine areas of good practice, one
recommendation and 13 requirements.
“We have been assured that progress has been made by NHS Fife. However, further improvement is required around patient dignity, hand hygiene, patient documentation, fire training compliance and the safe storage of cleaning products and safe management of waste.”
Donna Maclean, Chief Inspector, Healthcare Improvement Scotland
